In an attempt to get this section moving. Here is an advert for a second hand welder that is sitting in 'All Welding' on consignment. The owner requests $2500 for this fine piece of machinery. This 315AMP output, 3 phase machine is certainly as robust as any ESAB unit. The transformer is wound in copper unlike many other transformer based welders, which means that it is build to last. It also has so much character that I was dead against wiping it over before taking this photo with my brand spanking new camera. This puppy just welds forever.

You are so right, Built like a brick dunny and sadly not made like that any more.
Younger welders just don't understand the grunt these older machines had. Some of them you have to explain current density to.Give them a go on this old girl and suddenly they understand. I hope it has not had too much air arc done with her. Operators tend to drive them over their duty cycle which overheats them and buggers up the insulation between the transformer stack shim plates. Was it hard wired or has it got a plug. Plugs are worth a dollar or two (many) these days? grumpy

It is currently equipped with a 30Amp 3phase plug.
I also forgot to mention the all important duty cycles for the curious- 100% at 200Amps 60% at 250Amps 35% at 315Amps
Other technical info and a parts breakdown can be found at this link- http://manuals.esab.com/_private/Library....df?noCache=7055
