Hi Andy, vertical ups with a rod is not an easy technique but a successful finish can be obtained. The best thing to do is start with some practice pieces before attempting the real thing. The position and speed of the rod plays a huge part. Holding your rod at about 10-15dgs below horizontal is good for visual of welding area, not "drowning" your electrode in the weld pool. There are a few different styles of rod manipulation and use what works best for you. Start your weld from the center of the join and allow the rod to burn enough heat and create a weld pool and then simply weave the rod to the outside or what will be the edge of your weld. Hold the rod there for about 1.5 to 2 secs and gently move across to the opposite side and once there repeat the count. When moving back across again raise the rod as if going on a escalator and again hold that position. The reason for pausing at the sides is to minimize any undercut on the weld edge. Find the best amps for the job and you will know if the amps are too high cause the weld pool will drop and flow down quickly. If as are too low the weld pool will choke your electrode and it will stick or "jam". Find the happy medium takes some time and you will know when you have it right because the slag will freeze just below your welding area as you are moving up and you have good control of your weld pool . Like i said there are a few different styles that people follow and do the one that suits you best and also get as comfortable as you can with minimum body adjustment as this will affect your welding arm position and maybe mess up the job. Dont forget to prepare and clean the area to be welded. I hope this helps and maybe others can add to this.

No mate, we are tying the i beam and lower c channel together for stiffness because we are removing 2 support posts to make way for a wall....
