When preparing tungsten electrodes there are a few things that you need to know and do to achieve the best quality finish that you can depending on your experience. Tungsten electrodes are always pre ground before any welding is performed to allow for the best performance during the tig welding process.
The welding polarity that you will be using ie AC-hf or DC. The base metal or parent that is going to be welded
The grinding technique is very important and must be done in a longitudinally pattern. The grinding wheel should be of a fine grit and only used for this purpose to keep the electrode clean from any contaminates that may be imbeded from grinding of different types of metals. Use this wheel only for this purpose Electrodes for DC welding should be long and sharp (tapered) and electrodes for AC should be more the shape of a ball point pen.
These are only basic tips and there is and there are other guidelines but basically if you follow these steps you will find that the welding process is easier to do and of cause the finished quality of the welds will be a lot better. The more practice the better you get and less frustration you will suffer. So spend a little bit of time preparing to get better welds.
